How to solve the delay in written-response grading by building an assessment workflow that runs the moment students submit.
Written responses reveal a student's thinking better than anything else, and they also hold a teacher captive longer than anything else. Reading one paragraph from each of 30 students, scoring against a rubric, and writing a line of comment on each swallows an entire evening. And when you hand the work back two days later, the student has already forgotten what they were thinking when they wrote it. Half the value of a written assessment is decided not by the precision of the scoring but by how fast the feedback reaches the student.
The real reason grading runs late
Many teachers blame themselves — "I'm just slow" — but the actual cause is the workflow.
