By the time you have graded the five-minute quiz from the end of class and handed it back, you are already in the next period. When feedback is late, students have forgotten why they got it wrong. A red mark received three days later ends at "oh, I see" without correcting any thinking. Because the effect of formative assessment is roughly proportional to how fast the feedback arrives, AI's instant response is not a mere convenience but a core variable in instructional design. Only feedback received right after the mistake, while the traces of the student's own thinking are still in their head, actually works.

Turning "right or wrong" into "what to do next"

Good feedback tells students what to do next, not what they scored. It helps to design AI feedback in three layers.

  • Confirmation feedback: Tells them only whether they were right or wrong. The weakest effect.
  • Corrective feedback: Points out what was wrong and what the correct answer is.
  • Process feedback: Asks them back why they thought that and walks through the steps of their reasoning - this is where learning happens.

You have to reach the third layer for learning to occur.   • Feedback so long that students do not read it. Two or three sentences per item is plenty.
