In-Class Data: Reading the Formative Signals While You Teach
How to read student response data while a lesson is still running, not after it ends, and adjust on the spot.
Most learning data gets looked at after the fact. We review it once the lesson ends, once the unit ends, once the term ends. But data you read in the very moment the lesson is happening has an entirely different kind of power. If you learn mid-lesson that half the class missed the key question, you can reteach it right there instead of waiting for next time. If after-the-fact data is a retrospective, real-time data is the hand on the wheel while you are driving.
Signals you can read during the lesson

- Turn the responses you get into action immediately. Collect responses and then keep going as planned, and the traffic light is just decoration.
- Collect them anonymously. Ask for raised hands and the honest "I'm stuck" hides. A classroom where everyone nods along is the most dangerous kind.
- Do not overreact to a single item. A low percentage correct on one question is no reason to upend your whole plan. Look at the trend, not the point.

Data is helping you match the pace of the lesson to the students.
