Students may share a classroom, but their starting lines are all different. The strong ones get bored and the ones straining to keep up let go of the rope. Use AI to branch the same learning objective into three difficulty levels and you can bring everyone along within a single lesson.

What actually separates the levels

Ask only for "easier" and "harder" and AI just changes the sentence length. Branching that actually works comes from differences in cognitive load.

  • Lower tier: Give part of the information inside the options, and build the sheet mainly around fill-in-the-blank and matching.
  • Middle tier: Cut the cues and use short answers and brief explanations so students have to retrieve on their own.

  2. Ask for all three versions at once: Request "make all three versions, basic, standard, and advanced, in one pass."
  3. Ask for one combined answer key: Gather the answers for all three versions on one page to lighten grading.
  4. Add a redirect option: Tack on "two bonus items for students who finish the advanced version early" to fill the leftover time.

The point of differentiation is not to sort students but to give each one the right level of challenge. It is better to keep the difficulty labels out of students' sight.

Practical tips for running this in class

Even with three versions ready, students shrink back if the moment of handing them out gets awkward. How you run it matters as much as the materials.

  • Leave room for choice: Rather than assigning tiers unilaterally, say something like "start with the easy one and move on if you get stuck," and letting students pick their own level of challenge lowers the pressure.
  • Mark them with symbols, not colors: Use neutral labels on the worksheet like "Form A, Form B" and avoid names that reveal the difficulty.
  • Keep movement open: Getting the basic version once does not lock a student in for the term. Reassess each unit.
  • Protect time for shared discussion: Set aside the last ten minutes for all three groups to share the same conclusion, so separation does not turn into disconnection.

One teacher spread all three versions out on a table and let students come pick for themselves; she reports that students who normally only did the basic sheet increasingly took a run at the standard one. Having a choice created the motivation.
