To prepare a single period you find a video link on YouTube, paste the chart image into slides, and write the check questions on a separate worksheet. Then class starts and students break off the video to look for the slides, then shift their eyes to the worksheet. However good the material is, when it is scattered across different screens the flow of learning keeps breaking in the gaps. The problem is not the quality of the material but that several formats never join into one.

When material scatters, learning scatters

There are a few reasons multimodal material ends up feeling scattered instead.

  • A different tool for every format: video on YouTube, images in slides, text and questions on a worksheet, so students have to move between screens every time.
  • Broken context: with no bridge between the pieces — what to think about after watching the video, which concept the image connects to — students have to join them up themselves.
  • High switching cost: every tool change repeats the logging in and the link hunting, and attention scatters in those few seconds.

In the end the trouble is not that the formats vary, but that those formats are not laid out along a single flow. A question grounded in the video has to come right after the video, with the related image just below it, for students not to lose the thread.

A good multimodal lesson is not one that packs in a lot of material, but one that lays different formats side by side along a single flow.

Several formats in one module, through blocks
