Co-Designing a Performance Task Rubric with Students and AI
How to bring AI in as the draft writer while building the grading criteria for a PBL performance task together with your students.
The most common dispute in assessing a project task is the protest, "why did our group get less?" Every product looks plausible, yet the scores diverge, and students can't accept the reasoning. The cause is that the rubric existed only in the teacher's head right up until grading. Students did the task without knowing what they were supposed to do well, and the teacher applied the yardstick only after it was all over. A good rubric is a map for learning before it is an assessment tool. The criteria have to be in students' hands before the task begins, and where possible they should be built with the students. When students know the criteria in advance, they work while checking themselves against them. Use AI to throw out the first draft of this co-design quickly.
Steps for co-designing a rubric
Don't finish the rubric alone and hand it down; pull students in with this sequence.
- Analyze strong work: Look at a strong example and a weak one together with students and draw out "what separates these two" in their own words.
- Generate an AI draft: Give the AI the task and the goals and get a draft of criteria and level descriptors. This is strictly a starting point for discussion.
- Negotiate the criteria with students: Review the AI draft together, add and cut criteria, and rewrite the wording in students' language.
- Make the level descriptors concrete: Spell out "strong / adequate / needs work" as observable behavior. Clear out the vague adjectives. Instead of "researched thoroughly," for instance, write something like "cited three or more sources from different origins," so anyone reading it reaches the same judgment.
When students take part in building the grading criteria, those criteria become a goal rather than a judgment. You want to live up to a standard you made yourself.
Why you don't use the AI draft as-is
An AI-generated rubric is fast, but using it untouched is risky. Check the following.
- Alignment with goals: Confirm the AI's criteria match your actual learning goals. It's easy to end up loaded with what is easy to measure while the competency that matters is missing.
- Too many criteria: AI produces a lot of criteria. Cut to four to six so that teacher and students can actually use them.
- Language level: Check that the descriptors are at a level students can read and understand. A rubric students can't read cannot serve as a map.
- Fairness: Look for wording that would disadvantage students from particular backgrounds.
The point is a division of labor where AI handles the quick draft and people handle alignment and fairness. A rubric's authority comes, in the end, from being tied to the goals.
