As lessons built around AI spread, a new kind of inequality appears. Between students who have a stable internet connection and a device of their own at home and students who do not, the starting line is drawn outside the classroom. School hands the same digital assignment to everyone, but some students share one phone with a sibling and only get online late at night. Ignore this gap and adopting AI will widen the differences rather than narrow them.

Three layers of the home-environment gap

This is not simply a matter of having a device or not having one. The gap stacks up in layers.

  • Device gap: Whether the student has a device of their own, how large the screen is, how old it is.
  • Connectivity gap: Whether the data plan is unlimited, how stable the Wi-Fi is, what hours the student is allowed to be online.
  • Support gap: Whether there is an adult at home to ask when the student gets stuck. This layer weighs most heavily on whether learning continues.

Before the fact that you assigned the work digitally, ask first whether every student can do that work under the same conditions.

The gap shows up as signals, not as results

A gap in the home environment rarely comes out of a student's mouth. Few students say, “the internet doesn't work at my house.” What appears instead are indirect signals: work that repeatedly goes unsubmitted or arrives late, or a student shrinking back during digital activities in class. If a teacher reads that only as a problem of diligence, the student who actually needs help gets pushed away one more time. So when you run digital assignments, it helps to keep a separate channel open for asking why work was not turned in. A short anonymous survey about a student's setup, or a gentle check during a one-on-one conversation, is exactly that. It also helps to make a habit of always offering a non-digital alternative alongside the digital assignment, so students are not measuring their devices or data plans against each other. Sensitivity to the signals of the gap is where support begins.

A checklist for the school as a whole

  1. Design digital assignments so they can be finished inside school, or secure open lab hours at lunch and after school.
  2. For material students have to download at home, keep the file size small and make offline use possible.
  3. Use student welfare funds to connect device loans with data support, but keep the application process confidential and simple to reduce stigma.
  4. Keep deadlines flexible, and do not read an unsubmitted assignment as a problem of attitude right away.
  5. Survey home conditions at the start of the term so you know in advance which students need support.
  6. Offer assignments that can be done on paper or digitally, so a student in a hard situation can choose the alternative naturally without having to explain their circumstances. Simply opening up the choice protects many students from exposure they should never have to face.
