"If AI makes everything for them, what happens to children's creativity?" It is the worry I hear most often. But just as the brush never took creativity away from the painter, a tool does not do the thinking for you. The problem is not the tool but how it is used. Hand AI the finished product and creativity shrinks; use AI as a springboard for ideas and creativity actually widens. Let us look at the design that makes the difference.

Uses that grow creativity and uses that kill it

The same AI produces different outcomes depending on how it is used.

  • The killing use: asking for a finished product from the start and submitting it as is. The student has nothing left to choose.
  • The growing use: taking twenty ideas, then narrowing, twisting, and combining them. Selecting and transforming are the student's work.
  • The decisive difference: who makes the final judgment and does the combining. Creativity comes alive when a person sits in the editor's chair.

Creativity does not come from nothing. It comes from spreading out plenty of material quickly, picking the strange ones, and connecting them.

In other words, AI increases the quantity of ideas, and the student develops the eye for which of those many candidates to keep.

An activity that uses AI as a springboard

Take a lesson that combines art and writing as an example. It runs in these steps.

  1. Diverge: get twenty ideas on one theme from AI and spread them across the board.
  2. Select: students pick the three that strike them as strangest or most appealing.
  3. Transform: deliberately twist the chosen ideas or combine two of them into something new.
  4. Finish: complete the artwork or the piece of writing by hand, without AI.

In this flow AI appears only in step 1, and selecting, transforming, and finishing, the core creative decisions, all stay with the student. One teacher reports that with this approach, the time students spent stalled saying "I have nothing to write about" dropped sharply. The trick is to ease the fear of the blank page without handing over the decisions.

Add one more device and the effect grows. Have students write one line on why they chose that idea and how they twisted it. That short note acts as a bridge that turns an accidental choice into a conscious creative decision. And when assessment looks not only at the polish of the product but also at the originality of the transformation and the reasoning behind the choice, students work to leave their own mark rather than using what AI gave them as is. Creativity grows, in the end, out of the power to decide what to add and what to throw away.
