It would be simpler to settle the matter with "No AI in this class." But the moment students walk out of your room, they are already using it — for homework, for searching, even for talking through personal worries with a chatbot. Banning it doesn't make it disappear; it just moves it somewhere you can't see. The real problem isn't that students use AI. It's that they copy its answers down without ever doubting them. When calculators arrived, we didn't ban them — we taught students when and how to use them. AI deserves the same: teaching students to use it well is education's job.

Three parts of using AI well

AI literacy isn't a vague slogan. It breaks down into three concrete abilities.

  • Asking good questions: knowing what to ask to get closer to the answer you actually need.
  • Doubting the answer and checking it: instead of treating the AI's response as truth, examining its reasoning and sources to confirm it holds up.
  • Restating it in your own words: not passing the response along as-is, but rewriting it in your own language, as far as you actually understand it.

Literacy in the age of AI isn't the ability to get an answer quickly. It's the ability to doubt that answer, verify it, and make it your own.
