Keeping the Process of Scientific Inquiry: Lab Records and Observations as a Module
Lab reports that hold only results leave the thinking out. Here is how an inquiry module records observation and experiment through blocks and file submissions.
Page through the reports you collected after a science lab and most of them end with a single paragraph copying the textbook's conclusion. What you actually want to know is what that student saw during the experiment, and how they rethought things when the result did not match their prediction — and none of that is recorded anywhere. The real substance of inquiry is not a polished result but the process of wavering, revising, and pressing on. The labs happen every time, but the process disappears, so students have nothing to look back on to see how they inquired, and teachers hold no evidence to assess beyond whether the conclusion was right.
Three limits of lab records that keep only results
The process disappears for reasons that lie in the tools and the format.
- A results-centered form: when the blanks ask only for a 'conclusion,' there is no place to write observations or revised hypotheses in the first place. What the form does not ask, students do not record.
- A single hand-in: written all at once after the lab is over, the vivid observations from the middle of the work have already faded from memory, and all that remains is a smoothed-out summary.
- Split media: photos on a phone, numbers in a notebook, reflections in yet another document — nothing ties into one record.
To assess inquiry, you cannot grade the conclusion; you have to be able to see the path the student's thinking traveled.
Putting the inquiry process into a module with Flipsson
