Search for flipped classroom advice and "keep the pre-class video under five minutes" is the first thing you find. But follow that five-minute rule literally and something odd happens. Some concepts get crammed into five minutes, the explanation gets cut off, and students end up more confused; some units need five concepts at five minutes each, and students receive a 25-minute pile of videos. You followed the five-minute rule and the pre-class workload got heavier — that is the paradox. Length is a result, not a cause. The real criterion is not time but whether one video holds exactly one concept. Fix on that criterion and videos get shorter naturally, without being tied to the number five.

Segment by concept, not by clock

Change the unit of video design from minutes to concepts and the choices get simple.

  • One video, one concept: A video holds only as much as one self-check question can verify. That might come out to three minutes, or seven.
  • Cut at the branch points: End the video where students need to stop and think — that is, where the concept changes. Do not smooth it over into one continuous piece.
