The week after you finish the photosynthesis unit, students write down chlorophyll and carbon dioxide just fine on the test — but ask them why a plant lives differently by day than by night and the room goes quiet. They've learned plenty of facts, but there's no thought threading those facts together. When you're scrambling to cover the pacing guide, the lesson turns into copying over a list of terms, and students finish the unit having briefly memorized vocabulary rather than understood a concept.
