It is the same student, which is what makes it so strange. They will take on a hard game stage again and again, but in front of three review problems from the textbook they cannot last five minutes before drifting off. We tend to say "kids these days have no attention span," but the stubborn focus they show in front of a game tells a different story. The problem is not the student's attention span but the fact that learning has not been designed to feel like a challenge worth attempting. Take apart the machinery a game uses to hold on to people and most of it turns out to be not prize money or flashy graphics but well-built design.

Four devices games use to hold on to people

Strip away the rankings and the prizes, and what creates engagement is these four things.

  • Clear goals and stages: What you have to do now and what the next gate is are always in view. There is no vague "work hard."
  • Immediate feedback: The result of an attempt comes right back. No game makes you wait two days to find out whether you got it right.
  • Small wins that accumulate: It does not ask you to finish everything at once; it slices the work into pieces you can pass.
  • Interaction with peers: You are spurred on by other people's attempts, and other people notice what you have achieved.

The heart of gamification is not badges or leaderboards. It is a design that slices learning into challenges the size a student can pass and hands the result straight back.

Layering the grammar of games onto a lesson with Flipsson
