The great paradox of the flipped classroom is the confession that "once I sent the concepts home on video, there was nothing left to do in class." You sent the explanation home, so the room is empty, and without a plan for that empty space the teacher ends up giving the same explanation one more time. Then students lose any reason to watch the video, and along with the line "you're going to explain it in class anyway," your pre-work viewing rate collapses. Half of flipped-classroom design rests not on the video but on what you fill the emptied class time with. Put as much care into designing in-class activity as you put into making the video, and the two halves come into balance.

A menu of activities for class time

It is best to have the activities that fill that time prepared in advance as a menu. You pick from it based on that day's pre-work data.

  • Misconception discussion: take the self-check questions that many students missed and have pairs discuss "why did I choose this answer?" Correction begins the moment the wrong reasoning is said out loud.
  • Application task: solve problems that put the concept to work in a real situation. This is the step of carrying what the video taught into an unfamiliar context.
  • Peer teaching: students who understood it explain to students who are stuck. The one explaining learns the most.
  • Extension option: keep a separate stretch task for students who finish quickly. Do not leave them waiting.

Class time is not where a concept is met for the first time but where it is put to use. When that premise wobbles, the flipped classroom becomes nothing more than a lesson with a lot of homework.

Let the data pick the day's menu

Even with a menu in hand, what comes off it is decided by that day's data. When AI summarizes the pre-work results, the choice comes fast.

  1. A shared misconception shows up: open with misconception discussion as a whole-class activity.
  2. Understanding is polarized: put peer teaching at the center and deliberately pair strong students with stuck ones.
  3. Most students got it: go straight to the application task and the extension, and save time.
  4. Only a few are stuck: sit with those students yourself while the rest work through the application task.

The key is the habit of looking at the data five minutes before class and locking in the menu. Plan everything in advance and you will end up ignoring the data; try to analyze the data from scratch every day and you will burn out. Fixed menu, data-driven choice is the realistic division of labor. On a day when the self-check accuracy comes in at 90% on average, you skip the misconception discussion, go straight to application and extension, and save 20 minutes; on a day it comes in at 60%, you give more of the period to peer teaching. Same menu, different course served depending on the day's data.
