In one classroom, somebody finishes in five minutes and somebody else can't get through it in a full period. Facing the same problem, one student puts down her pencil and waits while another is stuck on the first line. Pretend the gap isn't there and teach at a middle pace, and you lose both of them. The fast student loses interest to boredom; the slow one gives up under accumulated frustration. Differentiated instruction is not about giving each student a different goal. It is a design that opens several roads to the same goal. The destination is one, but students who start in different places and walk at different strides each get a road of their own. The key is not improvising branches mid-lesson but preparing the paths in advance and assigning them on the spot.

The three axes of differentiation

Which axis you differentiate on depends on what you want to vary. Don't touch all three at once - pick one.

  • Content: Students meet the same concept through materials at different difficulty levels. Prepare an image-heavy version, a text version, and an advanced version.
  • Process: Vary how they get there. Some students work it out directly; others work through it with step-by-step hints.
  • Product: Let them show the same understanding in different forms. Have them choose between writing, drawing, and presenting.

Differentiation is not sorting students into tiers. It is paving several roads to the same destination. One goal, many routes.

Building and assigning the paths with AI

Preparing three paths by hand every time will wear you down. Use AI as an assistant for designing the routes.

  1. Adapt the materials: Have AI turn one text into an easy version, a standard version, and an advanced version so your content-differentiated materials come together fast. What used to mean a late night rewriting one set of materials at three levels now takes minutes.
  2. Generate hint tiers: Build three sets of hints at different strengths for the same problem and use them for process differentiation.
  3. Assist the assignment call: Let AI look at the pre-assessment results and suggest a recommended path per student, but the teacher makes the final assignment.
  4. Allow movement between paths: Don't fix a student to one path. Leave the road open so a student who finishes the easier path quickly can move up to the next one.

The thing to guard against most is differentiation turning into a label. Don't name the paths high, middle, and low, and leave room for students to choose or switch paths themselves; then differentiation works as an option rather than a ranking.
