Teachers who try the flipped classroom all run into the same wall. You have students watch a video at home and only half of them actually watch it; then when you go to run the activity in class, the video link is on YouTube, the worksheet is in a Google Doc, and the discussion is in yet another app, so every period turns into wandering between tools. Project-based learning is much the same. While a group gathers material and builds its product, the process gets split across several tools, and the teacher cannot see at a glance who has gotten how far. More often than not this is a problem of a tool environment that breaks the flow, before it is a problem of design.

Draw the flow first, then fill in the activities

Good lesson design is not a matter of listing activities. It is drawing the path along which learning continues as a single line. Flipped classroom or PBL, settle this order first.

  1. Input beforehand: Students meet the concept in advance. Video or reading material goes here.
  2. Check and diagnose: Confirm briefly whether students really understood, and find out where they got stuck.
  3. Apply and collaborate: Discuss or build something in class. Put here the work that only goes well with people together.
  4. Consolidate and review: Tie what they learned back together in their own words.

Students follow along when these four stages continue as one flow. When the bridges between the stages are weak, the flipped classroom is just a lesson with more homework attached.

Assembling the flow out of blocks
